Activated Insights, Great Place to Work Institute, Fortune Magazine Publish First Best Workplaces in Aging Services List

OAKLAND, Calif. — Activated Insights, the Great Place To Work Institute and Fortune magazine have released their first “Best Workplaces in Aging Services” list.

Activated Insights, an Oakland-based labor research firm led by industry veteran Jacquelyn Kung, led the drive to have aging services added as a subset of the annual “Best Companies to Work For” list released by Fortune.

Great Place to Work Institute, which has worked with Fortune on similar lists for 20 years, analyzed anonymous survey feedback to determine the winners. The responses represent more than 162,000 employees working in seniors housing and care, as well as at-home and hospice care, in the United States.

Employees responded to over 60 survey questions describing the extent to which their organization creates a positive atmosphere for workers. Just over 85 percent of the evaluation is based on what employees say about their experiences of trust. Great Place to Work Institute then analyzes these experiences relative to each organization’s size, workforce make up, and what’s typical in their industry and region.

Great Place to Work claims a margin of error representing 5 percent or less on its methodology.

Winners on the list range from single properties, such as first-place Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Commack, N.Y., to large, well-known companies such as Merrill Gardens and Sunrise Senior Living.

Kung hopes the annual list will help employees be drawn to seniors housing, an industry with a looming shortage of qualified workers.

“This is different than just surveying a company,” says Kung. “For our industry, it will be taking off the stigma a bit, so it becomes, ‘Wow, this is an industry where you can build a career.'”
