NEW YORK CITY — Sunrise Senior Living will be the operator of Hines and Welltower’s much-watched seniors housing development in Midtown Manhattan.
Welltower, the seniors housing industry’s biggest REIT, and Hines, an international real estate firm, announced the still-unnamed project in June. The 15-story assisted living and memory care community will be located at the corner of 56th Street and Lexington Avenue.
SLCE Architects designed the building, which will feature first-floor retail space in addition to the seniors housing on the floors above. The seniors housing portion will feature 125,000 square feet of living space, though the number of units has still not been released.
According to Sunrise, Manhattan has an extreme lack of seniors housing — only 75 licensed assisted living and memory care beds — despite being the focal point of the country’s most populous city.
The community is slated for a 2019 opening.
