NEW YORK CITY — The Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC) has broken ground on Corona Senior Residence, a 68-unit, energy-efficient, affordable seniors housing community in the Corona neighborhood of Queens.
All apartments will be income-restricted with the exception of a superintendent’s unit, with 21 units reserved for vulnerable seniors. Bruno Frustaci Contracting Inc. is building the property, which is slated to open in spring 2018. The architect on the project is think! Architecture and Design.
The development will include an intergenerational aspect due to a preschool the School Construction Authority is building on the ground floor. Other amenities include a shared rear yard with a vegetable garden, seating and tables for residents, and a children’s play area.
The $35 million project was funded in part by $12.8 million in Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), a construction loan from JP Morgan Chase, a permanent loan from NYCERS, and government funding. All apartments will receive rent subsidy through the Senior Affordable Rental Apartments (SARA) program.
The new structure will be the first affordable housing site built in Corona in over 30 years, according to the developers.
